WHAT IS 'NEED'?
The legal document relating to the Fund clearly states
“The Managing Trustees shall apply the income of the Charity and at their discretion the whole or any part of the property thereof in relieving need among members of the Association and their dependants who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress”
The Trustees have a wide choice of the type of relief they can provide providing there is a demonstrative need.
Some typical examples of need include:
- Too little income to support living costs because of unemployment, long term illness, loss of the purchasing power of a pension
- Build up of debts – being pressed for repayment and the cost of servicing debt
- Sudden unexpected and unaffordable expenses e.g. house repairs
- No access to normal source of credit – loans & overdrafts etc – because of age or financial circumstance.

The Fund should not normally give aid until the potential beneficiary has identified and applied for all relevant statutory benefits. Help is given in advance of benefits coming through when necessary.
